Search "550cc injectors" and you will find a sea of Bosch-style port injectors promising easy fueling headroom. So can you just drop a set into your supercharged S4 or your 4.0T? Short answer: no, and it is not because Audi hates fun. 550cc injectors are port injectors, and the EA837 3.0T and EA825 4.0T use direct injection from the factory. Different job, different hardware, different mounting location. In this guide we explain the difference, where 550cc injectors actually make sense on an Audi, and how to keep the injectors you already have flowing like new with our Audi injector rebuild and flow testing service.
What Are 550cc Injectors?
The number is flow: roughly 550 cubic centimeters of fuel per minute at a rated test pressure, usually 3 bar for port injectors. That works out to about 52 lb/hr. Bosch and other OE suppliers build injectors in this size range for port injection, where the injector sits in the intake manifold or runner and sprays fuel onto the back of the intake valve at low pressure. It is a popular size for older turbo engines and for moderate power upgrades on port-injected cars.
Port vs Direct Injection on the EA837 and EA825
Here is the key fact most 550cc injector listings skip. Your Audi does not have a port injector to upgrade.
- ✅ EA837 3.0T supercharged (B8 and B8.5 S4, S5, Q5 and SQ5, C7 A6 and A7, D4 A8, Q7): direct injection. Each injector sits in the cylinder head and sprays straight into the combustion chamber, with rail pressures that can exceed 2,000 psi.
- ✅ EA825 4.0T twin-turbo V8 (C8 RS6 and RS7, 4M SQ7, SQ8 and RSQ8, D5 S8): direct injection, per Audi technical documentation for the engine.
- ✅ A port injector like a 550cc unit is designed for a few bar of pressure and a manifold bore. It will not physically fit a direct injector bore, and it could never survive direct injection pressure.
| Feature | Port injection (550cc style) | Direct injection (factory 3.0T, 4.0T) |
|---|---|---|
| Injector location | Intake manifold or runner | Cylinder head, into the chamber |
| Fuel pressure | Low, a few bar | Very high, over 2,000 psi on the 3.0T |
| Rated by | cc/min at 3 bar | Flow at high pressure, not comparable |
| Keeps intake valves clean | Yes, fuel washes the valves | No, carbon can build on valves |
| Drop-in for EA837/EA825 | No | Factory part |
Where 550cc Injectors Do Make Sense on an Audi
There are two honest places:
- Older port-injected Audi engines. Many earlier Audi turbo engines were port injected, and upgrading to a larger port injector with a matching tune is a classic move.
- Auxiliary port injection on a direct-injected engine. When a big-power 3.0T or 4.0T build runs out of direct injection fuel, especially on E85, tuners add a second set of port injectors in the intake plus a controller. The factory direct injectors keep working, and the port injectors add fuel on top. Injector size is chosen for the power target and fuel type.
If you are headed down the auxiliary route, the supporting hardware matters as much as the injector. We stock high-flow Injector Dynamics ID1050XDS port injectors (rated 1065cc/min at 3 bar and compatible with all known fuels, $537.60-$1,075.20 for sets of 4 to 8), the ReFlex LITE sequential port injection controller built for direct-injected cars that need extra fuel ($469.00-$479.00), and a genuine Continental ethanol content sensor ($95.00) for flex fuel builds. Pair any auxiliary setup with a tuner who supports it on your platform.
How to Size Injectors: A Rough Rule of Thumb
Injector sizing starts with a standard formula: required flow in lb/hr = horsepower x BSFC / (number of injectors x maximum duty cycle). One lb/hr is about 10.5 cc/min. As a rough estimate only, six 550cc port injectors at 80% duty with a boosted-gasoline BSFC of 0.65 could support somewhere near 380-390 crank horsepower of fuel by themselves on pump gas. E85 needs roughly 30-40% more fuel volume, so the same injectors support much less power on ethanol. In an auxiliary setup the direct injectors are still carrying a large share, so the math is shared. Let your tuner run the real numbers.
Before You Upgrade: Are Your Factory Injectors Healthy?
Here is the unglamorous truth: many "I need bigger injectors" stories start with tired factory injectors. A clogged direct injector sprays unevenly, drops flow and makes fuel trims wander. Your tune then chases a problem that is not about capacity at all. Before you spend four figures on a fueling upgrade, make sure what you have is flowing to spec.
Signs your direct injectors need attention:
- ✅ Rough cold starts or a misfire that coils and plugs did not fix
- ✅ Fuel trims drifting on one bank
- ✅ Fuel smell on startup from a dripping injector
- ✅ Uneven power delivery or a fuel-related check engine light
Our injector rebuild service starts at $25.00 per direct injector: electrical testing, a baseline flow test, ultrasonic cleaning with back-flush, a post-service flow test and new O-rings and filter baskets, with a flow report for your records. Injectors that fail the initial electrical or visual check are returned with no service charge. The full process is explained in our ultrasonic injector cleaning guide.

What to Look For Before Buying Any Injector Upgrade
- ✅ Correct injection type: port or direct, never interchangeable
- ✅ Flow rating at the pressure your system actually runs
- ✅ Fuel compatibility if you plan to run E85
- ✅ Tune support for your exact engine code
- ✅ Connector type and body length for your manifold or kit
- ✅ A fuel pump and supply that can feed the extra flow
Fitment: Reseal Kits for Factory Direct Injectors
Any time a direct injector leaves the head, its PTFE combustion seal must be replaced. Old seals relax and will not seal again.
- ✅ Gen 2 CREC and CREH 3.0T (2016-2018 A6 and A7, 2015-2018 A8, 2017-2018 Q7): the 06E998907F fuel injector reseal kit ($59.99) services all six injectors.
- ✅ Gen 1 3.0T supercharged (B8 and B8.5 S4, S5, Q5 and SQ5, C6 and C7 A6, A7, 4L Q7): the Elring 06E998907E injector repair kit ($12.95) services one injector, so order six.
Install Notes
On the 3.0T, injector service means the supercharger comes off, so bundle it with other valley work like PCV, thermostat and check valves. Label injectors by cylinder, use a proper puller and a PTFE seal sizing tool and check for leaks at the rail before the cover goes on. Auxiliary port injection installs are a bigger project involving intake machining or a dedicated manifold, fuel lines, wiring and tuning, so plan them with your tuner. 550cc Injectors FAQ
Will 550cc injectors fit my Audi 3.0T?
Not as a replacement. The EA837 3.0T uses direct injectors mounted in the cylinder head. 550cc injectors are port injectors, which only fit an intake manifold or an auxiliary port injection setup.
Are 550cc injectors port or direct injection?
The common 550cc injectors from Bosch and other suppliers are port injectors, rated at low pressure (usually 3 bar) for mounting in the intake manifold.
How much horsepower can 550cc injectors support?
As a rough estimate using a standard formula, six 550cc port injectors at 80% duty could fuel around 380-390 crank horsepower on gasoline. E85 needs roughly 30-40% more fuel, so support drops. Your tuner should confirm the real number.
Does the 4.0T EA825 use port injection?
Audi documents the EA825 4.0 TFSI as a direct injection engine. Port injection on these cars comes from aftermarket auxiliary kits.
Do I need bigger injectors for a tune?
For most mild tunes, no. Make sure your factory injectors are clean and flowing to spec first. Bigger fueling is usually only needed for high-power or E85 builds.
Can you clean and flow test my Audi injectors?
Yes. Our injector rebuild service starts at $25.00 per direct injector and includes electrical testing, ultrasonic cleaning, before and after flow testing and new O-rings and filter baskets.
Do I need new seals when I remove injectors?
Yes. Direct injector PTFE combustion seals cannot be reused. Use the 06E998907F kit for CREC engines or the Elring 06E998907E kit for Gen 1 3.0T engines.
Bottom Line on 550cc Injectors
550cc injectors are great port injectors, but they are not a bolt-in for a direct-injected EA837 3.0T or EA825 4.0T. For those engines, extra fuel means auxiliary port injection with the right controller and tune, or upgraded direct injectors built for the platform. For everyone else, the smartest first step is making sure your factory injectors are healthy. Send them to our injector rebuild and flow testing service and reinstall them with fresh seals.
