Audi SQ5 Tune: Stages, Pulleys and Hardware for the 3.0T

TruDrive overdrive crank pulley for the Audi SQ5 3.0T supercharged EA837 tune

Your SQ5 is a family hauler with a supercharged V6 in it, and it knows it. Then you drive a tuned one and the stock car suddenly feels like it is towing a sofa. An Audi SQ5 tune is one of the best bang-for-the-buck moves in the Audi world, but only if you do it in the right order: software first, then airflow, heat and exhaust in step with each other. On the supercharged 8R SQ5, the key hardware step is supercharger speed, which is why the TruDrive crank pulley for the SQ5 3.0T sits at the center of most builds. This guide walks through every stage, what it needs and what to fix before you flash.

Which SQ5 Do You Have? Supercharged vs Turbo

"SQ5" covers two very different engines in the US, and the right plan depends on which one lives under your hood.

  • ✅ 8R SQ5 (B8.5 platform, 2014-2017 US model years): 3.0 TFSI EA837 V6 with an Eaton supercharger in the engine valley. Audi quoted 354 hp and 346 lb-ft with an eight-speed automatic and quattro. This is the tuner favorite, because boost is set by pulley ratio.
  • ✅ Later SQ5 (B9/B9.5, 2018 on): 3.0T EA839 V6 with a single turbo in the hot V. Boost is set by the turbo and the software, so pulleys do not apply.

Most of this guide is about the supercharged car, because that is where the hardware path is deepest. B9 owners, skip to the turbo section below. Not sure? Your engine code on the timing cover label or service sticker settles it in ten seconds.

How an Audi SQ5 Tune Works on the Supercharged 3.0T

On the EA837 the supercharger is belt-driven off the crank. Stock boost is limited by two things: how fast the blower spins (pulley ratio) and how much the factory software allows through the bypass valve and throttle. An ECU flash tune changes the second part: timing, throttle mapping, bypass behavior and torque limits. A pulley change handles the first part by spinning the blower faster at every rpm.

That is why stages on this engine are really pulley stages:

  • ✅ Stage 1: ECU flash tune on the stock pulleys. Sharper throttle, more midrange, no hardware.
  • ✅ Stage 2: tune plus a smaller supercharger pulley or a larger crank pulley (single pulley). More boost everywhere.
  • ✅ Stage 2+ / dual pulley: both pulleys changed for the biggest boost jump, with intake, throttle body, cooling and exhaust support.
  • ✅ Beyond: ported supercharger, upgraded heat exchanger, high-flow cats and fueling work, usually on a custom tune.

Pair the engine software with a transmission (TCU) tune if you can. The eight-speed shifts faster and holds more torque cleanly when it knows what the engine is doing.

Before You Flash: Fix What the Factory Left Behind

A tune finds weak parts faster than any dealer diagnostic ever will. Before you add boost, rule out the classic 3.0T failures:

  • ✅ Torn PCV valve diaphragm (whistling at idle, lean codes, rough idle)
  • ✅ Cracked plastic thermostat housing or a weeping water pump in the valley
  • ✅ Tired ignition coils and plugs (misfires under boost are the first sign)
  • ✅ A worn supercharger belt or a loose, noisy tensioner
  • ✅ Any existing boost or vacuum leak, which a tune will only amplify

If the valley needs attention, do it all at once with our Under Supercharger Kit for the B8.5 SQ5 ($649.99): billet thermostat housing, aluminum heater pipe, Graf water pump, Hengst PCV valve and Elring gaskets and injector seals, so you only pay the Audi Tax on supercharger removal once. Refresh ignition with the Zeus ignition coil kit for the EA837 ($129.99) before you add boost, not after.

The Audi SQ5 Tune Hardware Path, Step by Step

1. Crank pulley: the heart of Stage 2

A larger crank pulley spins the supercharger faster without pulling the blower. Our TruDrive overdrive crank pulley uses a stainless steel inner hub with a CNC-machined aluminum outer ring, so there is no soft aluminum hub to compress, and the rings swap between 179mm, 187mm, 193mm and 207mm on the same hub. It works with single or dual pulley setups and ships with 12.9 grade hardware. Pair it with the Unzerstörbar crank pulley bolt kit and a fresh belt, and check your tensioner; our billet supercharger tensioner pulley replaces the factory plastic one.

2. Intake: let the blower breathe

Spin the blower faster and the factory airbox becomes the next choke point. The Titanium Intake V2 for the B8 and B8.5 Q5 and SQ5 ($359.99) is a 102mm titanium tract with a true heat shield, an integrated velocity stack, a four-layer synthetic filter, a single methanol bung and a fuel line relocation kit in the box.

3. 84mm throttle body

The factory throttle body is the next restriction between the intake and the blower. The Luft-Strom 84mm throttle body upgrade kit ($219.99-$349.99) includes the throttle body (genuine VDO or our Luft-Strom), a billet adapter tapped for methanol, gaskets and a plug-and-play harness. It needs a tune to work properly. Its published fitment list covers the S4, S5, C7 A6 and A7, D4 A8 and Q7, so SQ5 owners should confirm fitment with us before ordering.

4. Cooling: keep the boost cold

More boost means more heat in the air-to-water intercooler loop. Heat-soaked intake air makes the ECU pull timing, and your second pull feels weaker than your first. The GP Ice heat exchanger v2 ($449.99, currently pre-order) enlarges the front heat exchanger for the Q5, SQ5, S4, S5, A6 and A7. Our heat exchanger upgrade guide explains why it matters.

5. High-flow cats: protect the engine at dual pulley

Once you move past a basic single pulley setup, the factory catalytic converters see heat and flow they were never designed for, and a failing cat can break apart. Our high flow cats for the Q5 and SQ5 3.0T ($1,049.99-$1,299.99) are built from 2.0mm material, heat-shielded and rated to 950°C. They are made to order, so expect 14 to 21 days of processing.

Stage Planner at a Glance

Here is how the pieces line up. Treat it as a planning map, not a power promise: results depend on the tune, fuel, weather and the health of your car.

Stage Software Core hardware Supporting mods
Stage 1 ECU flash tune (TCU recommended) None Coils, plugs, healthy PCV and cooling
Stage 2 Tune matched to pulley Crank pulley or supercharger pulley Intake, fresh belt, tensioner
Stage 2+ / dual pulley Tune matched to both pulleys Crank and supercharger pulleys 84mm throttle body, heat exchanger, high-flow cats
Built Custom tune with data logging Ported supercharger Everything above plus fueling review

Tuning the Later Turbo SQ5 (B9/B9.5 EA839)

If your SQ5 is 2018 or newer, it is turbocharged, and stages are defined by software plus exhaust and intercooling, not pulleys. The groundwork is the same: fresh ignition from our Zeus ignition coil kit for the EA839 ($199.99) and, if you plan on higher boost, our 4 bar MAP sensors for the B9 EA839 ($99.99) so the ECU can read pressure the factory 3 bar sensors cannot. Both SQ5 generations can use the TruShift transmission mount upgrade ($19.99) to cut driveline slop once the torque goes up.

Warranty and Emissions Reality

Audi of America has published a technical service bulletin stating that no powertrain tuning is supported or warrantied, and that dealer tools can flag tuned ECUs with a "TD1" code that cannot be manually removed. If your SQ5 still has meaningful factory coverage or is leased, weigh that before flashing. High-flow cats and other emissions hardware must also meet the rules where you live; check before you buy.

Install Notes

  • ✅ Crank pulley: torque the hub to factory specification, then the ring to hub in a star pattern at 22 ft-lbs and again at 44 ft-lbs with blue Loctite.
  • ✅ Log fueling and knock after any pulley change, even though the pulley itself does not require a tune to install.
  • ✅ Replace the supercharger belt whenever you change pulley diameter.
  • ✅ Do throttle body and intake work together: both need the tune updated.
  • ✅ Save your stock ECU file and keep your logs. They make troubleshooting and resale easier.

Audi SQ5 Tune FAQ

What is the best first step for an Audi SQ5 tune?

On the supercharged 8R SQ5, start with a healthy car (PCV, cooling, coils) and a Stage 1 ECU flash tune, ideally with a transmission tune. Add a pulley when you want Stage 2.

Is the Audi SQ5 supercharged or turbocharged?

The 2014-2017 US SQ5 uses the supercharged 3.0T EA837 V6. SQ5 models from 2018 on use the turbocharged 3.0T EA839 V6.

Do I need a tune for a crank pulley on the SQ5 3.0T?

The pulley does not require a tune just to install, but it raises boost everywhere, so you should log fueling and knock or have your tuner confirm the setup. Most owners pair it with a Stage 2 tune.

Crank pulley or supercharger pulley first?

Either can be the Stage 2 step. A crank pulley does not require removing the supercharger pulley, and changing both is the dual pulley setup.

Do I need high-flow cats for an SQ5 tune?

Not for Stage 1. Once you go past a basic single pulley setup, factory cats see heat and flow they were not designed for, so heat-rated high-flow cats are strongly recommended.

Will an SQ5 tune void my warranty?

Audi of America states no powertrain tuning is warrantied, and dealer tools can flag tuned ECUs with a TD1 code. Powertrain claims on a tuned car are likely to be challenged.

Does the Titanium Intake V2 fit the SQ5?

Yes. The Titanium Intake V2 fits the B8 and B8.5 S4, S5, Q5 and SQ5 3.0T supercharged.

Can I tune the 2018 and newer SQ5?

Yes, the EA839 turbo SQ5 responds to ECU flash tunes. Pulleys do not apply, so upgrades center on software, ignition, MAP sensors, intercooling and exhaust.

Bottom Line on Your Audi SQ5 Tune

A smart Audi SQ5 tune is a sequence, not a single purchase: fix the valley, refresh ignition, flash the ECU, then add supercharger speed with heat and exhaust support to match. For the supercharged 8R SQ5, the TruDrive SQ5 crank pulley is where Stage 2 starts. Build it in order and your SQ5 stops feeling like it is towing a sofa.
