Your supercharger can only move air that has already squeezed through the throttle body, and on the supercharged EA837 V6 the factory unit is just 70mm. An Audi 3.0T 84mm throttle body swap opens that doorway up, and our Luft-Strom 84mm throttle body upgrade kit puts the throttle body, billet adapter, gaskets, hardware and harness in one box. Here is what each option includes, which adapter matches your supercharger and why the tune is not optional, for the B8 and B8.5 S4, S5, Q5 and SQ5, the C6 and C7 A6, the C7 A7, the D4 A8 and the 4L and 4M Q7.
Why the Factory Throttle Body Becomes the Bottleneck
On the 3.0T, the throttle body bolts to the front of the supercharger inlet, so every bit of air the blower moves passes through it first. The factory 70mm opening is plenty for factory boost. Spin the supercharger faster with a pulley, or port its inlet, and the blower wants more air than that doorway was sized for.
On paper, an 84mm bore has about 44 percent more open area than a 70mm bore. That is geometry, not a dyno promise: what you feel depends on your pulley, your supercharger, your intake and, above all, your tune.
Signs you have outgrown the factory throttle body:
- ✅ You run a bigger crank pulley or smaller supercharger pulley, or will soon. Our Audi 3.0T crank pulley upgrade guide explains how pulley size changes supercharger speed.
- ✅ Your supercharger is ported, with the inlet opened toward 80mm.
- ✅ You want a water-methanol nozzle without drilling your intake.
- ✅ Your tuner offers an 84mm throttle body file for your setup.
- ✅ Your factory throttle body needs replacing anyway, and the car is already tuned.
Bone stock and staying that way? Keep your money. Without a tune, the ECU does not know the bigger throttle body is there.
What to Look For in an 84mm Throttle Body Kit
Not every kit is built the same, and a cheap kit gets expensive fast when it needs a different intake or a different tune. Check these before you order:
- ✅ Bore and source. A true 84mm unit: genuine VDO, or one built under a recognized quality standard.
- ✅ The right adapter. Stock and ported supercharger inlets are different sizes, so the adapter should match yours.
- ✅ A plug-and-play harness. The 84mm VDO-style connector differs from your factory plug. No harness means pin-swapping.
- ✅ A pinout your tuner supports. Some tuning platforms expect a specific harness layout.
- ✅ Intake compatibility. A stock-location kit can keep your 3.5 inch intake. Some kits need their maker's own intake.
- ✅ Seals, hardware and a methanol port. Gaskets rated for fuel, oil and methanol, every bolt you need, and a port for future water-methanol injection.
84mm Throttle Body Kit vs Name-Brand Kits vs the Factory Part
Our kit pairs an 84mm throttle body, genuine VDO or our own Luft-Strom, with a billet adapter, gaskets, hardware and a plug-and-play harness: $219.99 with the Luft-Strom or $349.99 with the VDO unit. The name-brand kits we priced run about $600 to $880, use an 80mm or 84mm throttle body, and some only work with their maker's intake or a specific stage of their maker's software. Audi never offered an 84mm throttle body for the 3.0T, so the dealer can only sell you another 70mm unit. For once, the Audi Tax is not the problem. The name-brand markup is.

What's in Our Kit, and Why
Everything below ships together:
- ✅ 84mm throttle body: genuine VDO OEM or our Luft-Strom, chosen at checkout.
- ✅ Billet adapter plate: machined to a specific thickness for a smooth airflow path into the supercharger, with a built-in methanol port so you are water-methanol ready without drilling.
- ✅ Stock or ported supercharger opening: match your blower now instead of buying a second adapter later.
- ✅ Fuel, oil and methanol-resistant gaskets plus hardware, so it seals the first time.
- ✅ Vorsprung Autowerk harness: connects the VDO-style plug to your factory wiring with no cutting or splicing.
VDO OEM or Luft-Strom?
The VDO OEM unit is a genuine VDO-manufactured electronic throttle body with an 84mm bore. It is not Audi-branded, since Audi never sold an 84mm unit for this engine, but it is real OEM-supplier hardware. On its own, the VDO OEM 84mm throttle body is $244.99. Luft-Strom is our own 84mm design, built in an ISO 9001-certified facility to the same bore, and Luftstrom is German for airflow, which is the whole job description. Both use the same adapter and harness, so it comes down to badge versus budget. On its own, the Luft-Strom 84mm throttle body is $124.99.
Stock or Ported Supercharger Opening?
The factory supercharger inlet matches the 70mm throttle body, and porting opens it up. That is why our billet throttle body adapter for the 3.0T comes for a stock opening or an 80mm ported opening: stock if your snout is untouched, ported if it has been opened up. On its own, the adapter is $79.99 with metal gaskets, a black 1/8 inch NPT plug for the methanol port and the bolts.
Buying Piece by Piece
Already own an 84mm VDO-style throttle body? You only need the adapter and the $14.99 harness. Just remember that a standalone throttle body will not bolt on by itself: it needs the adapter, the harness and a coupler sized for your intake's throttle body opening.
Do You Need a Tune? Yes, and Here's Why
A bigger throttle body moves more air at the same pedal position, so your ECU has to know it is there. Our kit listing is blunt about it: budget for a tune alongside the install, or you have just bolted on a bigger part. The kit works with the major tuning platforms, but the file has to be written for an 84mm throttle body. Settle three things with your tuner first:
- ✅ The file: 84mm throttle body software for your car and your hardware.
- ✅ The pinout: our plug-and-play throttle body harness needs no pin-swapping, but some tune providers pin their software to a specific layout and may ask you to re-pin the connector.
- ✅ The calibration check: after the install, confirm fueling, idle and drive-by-wire behavior, and run the throttle body adaptation your tuner calls for.
Engine software and intake changes can matter for emissions inspections in some states, so check your local rules before you flash.
Fitment: Which Audi 3.0T Models Take the 84mm Swap?
The kit is built for the supercharged 3.0T EA837 V6, including the later CREC version. Per the listing, that means the B8 and B8.5 S4 (2010 to 2016), the S5 Cabriolet from 2010 plus every B8.5 S5 through 2017 (the 2008 to 2012 S5 coupe has the 4.2 V8), the B8.5 Q5 3.0T and SQ5 (2013 to 2017), the C6 A6 3.0T (2009 to 2011), the C7 and C7.5 A6 and A7 3.0T (2012 to 2018), the D4 A8 3.0T (2013 to 2018) and the 4L and 4M Q7 with the supercharged 3.0T. One 84mm throttle body kit covers them all.
It does not fit the turbocharged EA839 3.0T in the B9 S4, S5 and newer cars. Not sure which engine you have? Our Audi 3.0T supercharged engine guide explains Gen 1 versus CREC, or email your VIN to help@vorsprungautowerk.com and we will confirm fitment before you order.
Install Notes: Time, Tools and Tips
Install guides for throttle body upgrades on the 3.0T put the wrenching at roughly one to two hours with basic hand tools, plus time for the flash and the adaptation.
- ✅ Tools: Torx bits (a T30 removes the factory throttle body bolts on the B8 S4), an Allen key, a flathead screwdriver and a swivel extension.
- ✅ Order: covers off, intake out, factory throttle body unplugged and unbolted, adapter and gasket on, 84mm throttle body on, harness connected, intake back in.
- ✅ Keep it clean: anything dropped into the inlet goes straight into the supercharger.
- ✅ Seal it right: a leak between the throttle body and the supercharger lets in air the throttle cannot control, which can show up as a rough idle.
- ✅ Check clearance: some installs need a plastic bracket near the throttle body bent or trimmed and the engine cover notched, especially on CREC engines.
- ✅ Log it: follow your tuner's flashing and adaptation steps, then watch throttle behavior and intake temperatures. Our intake air temperature logging guide shows what to look for.
Audi 3.0T 84mm Throttle Body FAQ
Do I need a tune for an 84mm throttle body on the Audi 3.0T?
Yes. A bigger throttle body changes how much air moves at a given pedal position, so the ECU needs software written for it.
What size is the factory 3.0T throttle body?
70mm. It is listed under part numbers 06E133062C, G and H depending on the car, and Audi never offered an 84mm version.
Will an 84mm throttle body fit my current intake?
Usually. Our kit mounts in the factory location, so most 3.5 inch intakes carry over, but intakes that use a silicone coupler boot at the throttle body may not be compatible.
Should I choose the stock or ported supercharger opening?
Stock if your supercharger inlet is unmodified, ported if it has been opened up. The ported adapter is machined for an 80mm opening.
What is the difference between the VDO OEM and Luft-Strom options?
Both are 84mm throttle bodies that use the same adapter and harness. VDO OEM is a genuine VDO-manufactured unit; Luft-Strom is our own design, built in an ISO 9001-certified facility, at a lower price.
Does the 84mm throttle body kit fit the B9 S4 or S5?
No. It is for the supercharged EA837 3.0T only, not the turbocharged EA839 3.0T in the B9 S4, S5 and newer cars.
Can I run water-methanol injection with this kit?
Yes. The billet adapter has a built-in 1/8 inch NPT methanol port, so there is nothing to drill. If you skip methanol, seal the port with a 1/8 inch NPT plug; the standalone adapter includes one.
How long does the install take?
Install guides put the wrenching at roughly one to two hours with basic hand tools, plus time to flash your tune and run the throttle body adaptation.
Bottom Line
The factory 70mm throttle body was sized for factory boost. Add pulley speed or a ported supercharger, and an 84mm swap with a matching tune is the logical next airflow step. Pick your throttle body, match the adapter to your supercharger and sort out the file with your tuner, then grab the Luft-Strom Audi 3.0T 84mm throttle body upgrade kit. Planning the rest of the build? Our Audi supercharger upgrade guide lays out the order, the Audi S4 mods roadmap turns it into stages, and the turbo and supercharger upgrades collection has the pulleys and porting to match.
