Your supercharged 3.0T already pulls hard. Then you drive one with more pulley and the stock car suddenly feels polite. An Audi 3.0T crank pulley upgrade is the most direct way to spin the supercharger faster, because the blower is belt-driven off the crankshaft and its speed is set by two pulley diameters. The catch? Size, belt, bolts and tune all have to agree. Our TruDrive Audi 3.0T crank pulley upgrade pairs a stainless steel hub with your choice of interchangeable 179, 187, 193 or 207mm aluminum ring. Here is how pulley size changes supercharger speed, which ring suits your setup, and how to install it without drama.
The Problem: A Fixed Ratio and a Belt Drive That Has to Keep Up
From the factory, supercharger speed at any rpm is locked in by the crank and supercharger pulley diameters. A Stage 1 flash can change timing, throttle mapping and bypass valve behavior, but it cannot spin the blower faster than the pulleys allow. More pulley also asks more of everything the belt touches, so read the signs first:
- ✅ Stage 1 tuned, healthy car, and you want more midrange: that is pulley territory.
- ✅ Chirp or squeal that changes with rpm, or a glazed, frayed belt: sort the belt drive first.
- ✅ A wobbly or rough tensioner pulley: the factory pulley is plastic.
- ✅ Oil on the back of the crank pulley: suspect the front main seal right behind it.
- ✅ Crank pulley bolts that have been out before: factory bolts are a weak point under repeated removal and torque cycles.
Bolts deserve their own warning. One long-running owner thread documents a B8 S4 that sheared all eight crank pulley bolts on a one-piece aluminum pulley, with the debate centered on clamp load, bolt length and soft aluminum under the bolt heads. Extra blower speed is fun. A pulley hanging by its belts is not.
How Crank Pulley Size Changes Supercharger Speed
The belt moves at the same surface speed on both pulleys, so supercharger speed is simple ratio math: blower rpm = engine rpm × (crank pulley diameter ÷ supercharger pulley diameter). A bigger crank pulley spins the blower faster, and a smaller supercharger pulley does the same from the other end. Change one and it is a single pulley setup, change both and it is dual pulley, and the TruDrive works with either.
The factory crank pulley is commonly measured at about 162mm, so every TruDrive ring is an overdrive, even the 179mm. Here is what each ring works out to with the factory supercharger pulley. It is geometry, not a boost or power promise: results depend on tune, fuel, heat and the health of the car.
| TruDrive ring | Blower speed vs factory (diameter math) | Best for, per the listing | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 179mm | Roughly 10% faster | Stock to mild tunes, first-time overdrive upgrades | $224.99 |
| 187mm | Roughly 15% faster | Stage 1 to 2 tunes; the most popular size with B8 and B8.5 S4 and S5 owners | $251.99 |
| 193mm | Roughly 19% faster | Stage 2+ tunes with supporting fuel upgrades | $278.99 |
| 207mm | Roughly 28% faster | Built, high-boost setups with upgraded fueling and supporting mods | $296.99 |
What About the Tune?
Our listing's tune guidance, as stated: no dedicated tune is required just to install the pulley, but because it raises supercharger speed (and boost) across the rev range, we recommend logging or having your tuner confirm your fueling and knock levels can support the added airflow, especially if you already run a smaller supercharger pulley or an aggressive tune. The size guide is organized by tune stage, so pick the ring for the software and fuel you actually run. Staged build plans live in our Audi S4 mods roadmap, Audi SQ5 tune guide and Audi supercharger upgrade guide.
What to Look for in a 3.0T Crank Pulley
- ✅ A steel hub where it meets the engine. Aluminum under the bolt heads can compress, and clamp load keeps those eight small bolts alive.
- ✅ Sizes matched to real setups, with clear tune and fuel guidance from the seller.
- ✅ Room to grow. Can you change ratio later without buying a whole new pulley?
- ✅ Hardware and threadlocker in the box, plus a clear torque procedure.
- ✅ A belt plan. Belt length depends on the pulley combination, and the tensioner needs travel to spare.
- ✅ Real fitment help from people who know the platform, not a ticket bot.
TruDrive vs Typical Name-Brand Pulleys vs the Factory Pulley
In short: most name-brand 3.0T crank pulleys we checked are one-piece billet aluminum, one size per part number, at roughly $240 to $500 depending on size and whether a belt is bundled. The TruDrive pairs a stainless steel hub with a CNC-machined aluminum ring, comes in four sizes from $224.99 to $296.99, and changes ratio by swapping the ring while the hub stays put. Replacement TruDrive rings are sold on their own from $109.99, so changing sizes later does not mean buying a whole new pulley. The factory pulley is happy on a stock car, but it only comes in one size: stock.
| Vorsprung TruDrive | Typical name-brand pulley | Factory pulley | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build | Stainless steel hub, CNC-machined aluminum ring | Typically one-piece billet aluminum | Factory part, stock diameter |
| Sizes | 179, 187, 193 and 207mm on one hub | Usually one size per part number | One, about 162mm |
| Ratio changes | Swap the ring, keep the hub | Buy another complete pulley | Not an option |
| Hardware | 12.9-grade bolts and blue Loctite included | Varies, sometimes with a belt | Factory bolts |
| Price | $224.99 to $296.99 | About $240 to $500 | Comes with the car |

What Is in the TruDrive Kit and Why
- ✅ Stainless steel inner core assembly. The hub bolts to the same crank flange the factory pulley uses, so there is no aluminum to compress where the pulley meets the engine.
- ✅ Outer pulley ring in the size you choose. CNC-machined aluminum, designed for weight reduction and interchangeable for later ratio changes.
- ✅ 12.9-grade high-strength mounting hardware. Prefer 14.9? Email us about the upgrade discount.
- ✅ Blue Loctite threadlocker for a vibration-resistant install.
Why build it this way? The center has to hold clamp load mile after mile, so it is stainless. The outer ring sets your ratio, which may change as the build grows, so it is light and swappable. No hype and no gimmicky textures that wear off and chew up belts. Audi never offered a bigger pulley for this engine, so do not bother asking the dealer.
Audi 3.0T Crank Pulley Fitment
The TruDrive hub bolts to the same crank flange used across the supercharged EA837 3.0T and was developed and validated on the B8.5 S4. The TruDrive crank pulley listing covers these cars, with US model years in parentheses: the B8 and B8.5 S4 (2010 to 2016); the S5 3.0T (2010 to 2012 Cabriolet only, since that S5 coupe has the 4.2 V8, then the 2013 to 2017 coupe and Cabriolet); the B8.5 Q5 3.0T (2013 to 2017) and SQ5 (2014 to 2017); the C7 and C7.5 A6 and A7 3.0T (2012 to 2018); the D4 A8 3.0T (2013 to 2018); and the 4L (2011 to 2015) and 4M (2017 to 2019) Q7 3.0T. European-market B8.5 A5 3.0 TFSI owners should confirm the engine code, and turbo EA839 cars like the B9 S4, S5 and SQ5 have no supercharger at all. Not sure what you have? Install Notes: Time, Tools and Tips
Plan on a few hours. One published install guide for a 3.0T crank pulley estimates about three hours with the front end in service position, and one owner reported paying for three hours of shop labor. Some experienced B8 owners do it from underneath without service position, depending on the pulley.
Tools: triple square bits (an M10 12-point for the factory crank pulley bolts), a 16mm wrench or belt tool for the tensioners, T25 and T30 Torx bits, a torque wrench, the included blue Loctite and a paint pen.
Tips:
- ✅ Photograph the belt routing, and mark the offset hole: one of the eight factory bolt holes is offset, so line the hub up the same way.
- ✅ Torque the hub to the engine at the factory spec. For ring to hub, our listing calls for blue Loctite, 22 ft-lbs in a star pattern to preload, then 44 ft-lbs in a star pattern, torqued twice.
- ✅ Check clearance. Owners and install guides for larger 3.0T crank pulleys describe trimming a small casting nub beside the pulley so the belt clears it, so look before the first start.
- ✅ Fit a fresh supercharger belt sized for your combination and confirm the tensioner still has travel.
While the pulley is off, three upgrades make sense. The Unzerstörbar crank pulley bolt kit ($64.99 to $69.99) brings eight Grade 14.9 M8 bolts plus blue Loctite; the 25mm length suits the factory or TruDrive pulley. The billet supercharger tensioner pulley ($64.99 alone, $111.99 with a Litens OE tensioner) replaces the factory plastic pulley so belt tracking stays true at your new ratio. On B8, B8.5 and C7 cars, the billet front main seal ($124.99, listed as a pre-order) replaces the factory wiper seal right behind the crank pulley. Our tensioner pulley replacement cost guide and front main seal guide cover both jobs, and the full lineup lives in our turbo and supercharger upgrades collection.
Audi 3.0T Crank Pulley FAQ
What does a crank pulley upgrade do on an Audi 3.0T?
It spins the supercharger faster at every rpm. Blower speed equals engine speed times crank pulley diameter divided by supercharger pulley diameter, so a larger crank pulley raises blower speed without touching the supercharger.
Does a bigger or smaller crank pulley spin the supercharger faster?
Bigger. A larger crank pulley overdrives the blower. On the supercharger it is the opposite: a smaller supercharger pulley spins it faster.
Do I need a tune for a 3.0T crank pulley?
Our TruDrive listing says no dedicated tune is required just to install the pulley. It raises supercharger speed and boost across the rev range, though, so log the car or have your tuner confirm your fueling and knock levels can support the added airflow.
Which TruDrive crank pulley size should I choose?
Match it to your setup: 179mm for stock to mild tunes, 187mm for Stage 1 to 2 tunes, 193mm for Stage 2+ with supporting fuel upgrades, and 207mm for built, high-boost setups with upgraded fueling. Unsure? Email help@vorsprungautowerk.com.
Do I need a new belt or tensioner with a crank pulley?
Plan on a fresh supercharger belt sized for your pulley combination, because a diameter change alters belt wrap and tension. Make sure the tensioner has travel left, and consider a billet tensioner pulley while the belt is off.
How long does a 3.0T crank pulley install take?
One published install guide estimates about three hours with the front end in service position, and one owner reported paying for three hours of shop labor. Some experienced owners do it from underneath without service position.
Does the TruDrive fit the B9 S4 or other turbo 3.0T engines?
No. It fits the supercharged EA837 3.0T. The turbocharged EA839 in the B9 S4, S5 and SQ5 has no supercharger, so a crank pulley does not apply.
Bottom Line on Your Audi 3.0T Crank Pulley Upgrade
An Audi 3.0T crank pulley upgrade is ratio math with consequences: more blower speed, more load on the belt drive, and a tune and fuel system that must keep up. Pick the ring for the setup you run, use fresh hardware, size the belt to the combination and log the car afterward. Want a hub that will not compress and rings you can swap as the build grows?
