Shopping for an Audi A4 exhaust system is where a lot of owners find out that "fits A4" means almost nothing. The A4 badge covers several generations, front drive and quattro, sedan, Avant and allroad, and in North America the B8.5 and B9 A4 were 2.0T four-cylinder cars. The supercharged 3.0T V6 people rave about went into the S4, not the A4. So this guide does two things: it lays out the A4 exhaust by generation, options, sound and compliance, and it tells you honestly where to shop if your car is actually a 3.0T, starting with our high flow cats for the B8 and B8.5 S4, S5, Q5 and SQ5 3.0T.
How the Audi A4 Exhaust System Is Laid Out
Every modern turbo A4 follows the same basic path. Exhaust leaves the cylinder head and spins the turbocharger, then flows into the downpipe. The downpipe carries the first catalytic converter and the oxygen sensors that report to the ECU. Behind that sits the mid-pipe with a resonator, then the rear silencers and the tips you can see.
That gives you four upgrade zones, from least to most invasive:
- ✅ Axle-back: rear mufflers and tips. Mostly a sound and looks change.
- ✅ Cat-back: everything behind the catalytic converter. The usual street upgrade.
- ✅ Downpipe or test pipe: the section bolted to the turbo, where most of the restriction and most of the legal questions live.
- ✅ Turbo-back: downpipe plus cat-back in one package.
If those terms blur together, our explainer on what a turbo-back exhaust is breaks down each section in more detail.
By generation: B8, B8.5 and B9
B8 and B8.5 A4 (North American model years 2009-2016): 2.0T EA888 four-cylinder, front drive or quattro, sedan, Avant and allroad. Rear sections and tip layouts vary with body style and trim, so a cat-back for a single-outlet sedan may not suit a car with a different rear valance.
B9 and B9.5 A4 (US model years 2017-2025): newer 2.0T EA888 engines, again with front drive and quattro versions. Audi retired the A4 name after the 2025 model year and moved the sedan to the new A5, so B9 parts will remain the newest A4 exhaust fitment.
Outside North America the A4 also came with diesel and other engines whose exhaust carries different emissions hardware. None of that swaps with a petrol 2.0T system. Always shop by generation, engine, drivetrain and body style, not by the word "A4."
Audi A4 Exhaust Options Compared
The quick version: a cat-back changes sound with low legal risk, a downpipe changes power and sound but brings emissions and tuning questions, and a catless test pipe is strictly off-road. Here is how the common paths stack up on a 2.0T A4.
| Upgrade | What it changes | Needs a tune? | Emissions risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Axle-back | Tone at the rear, tips | No | Low (noise rules still apply) | Sound on a budget |
| Cat-back | Mid-pipe, mufflers, tips | No | Low if catalysts stay | Daily drivers |
| High-flow catted downpipe | Turbo outlet flow, spool, sound | Usually, for full benefit | Depends on certification | Tuned street cars |
| Catless downpipe or test pipe | Maximum flow, loud | Yes | High, off-road only | Track cars |
Notice the pattern: the closer to the turbo you go, the more you gain and the more paperwork you inherit. That is true on every Audi, 2.0T or 3.0T.
What to Look For Before You Buy
- ✅ Exact fitment: generation, engine, front drive or quattro, and body style. Sedan, Avant and allroad can differ at the rear.
- ✅ Resonated or non-resonated: resonators cost a little tone and save a lot of highway sanity.
- ✅ Material and wall thickness: stainless tubing and thick flanges resist cracking and warping far better than thin pipe.
- ✅ Flanges and clamps: quality joints seal the first time. Our guides to the 3 inch exhaust flange and the three bolt exhaust flange explain what separates a leak-free joint from a ticking one.
- ✅ O2 sensor provisions: bungs in the right place, and a plan for catalyst-efficiency codes if you change the downpipe.
- ✅ Legal status where you register the car: more on that below.
Sound and Drone: Choosing Your Tone
The A4 cabin is quiet, which makes low-frequency drone at 60 to 80 mph very obvious. Owners on B9 forums regularly report exhaust that sounded great in a cold-start video and exhausting on a two-hour drive. A few rules of thumb:
- ✅ A resonated cat-back is the safest choice for a daily driver.
- ✅ Non-resonated systems are louder at cruise. Try to hear one in person on the highway, not just in a revving clip.
- ✅ A downpipe changes the character of the whole system, even with the factory cat-back.
- ✅ Removing catalysts adds rasp and smell, which is exactly what most owners end up regretting.
Compliance: What Is Street Legal?
In the US, removing or disabling emissions equipment on a road car violates federal anti-tampering rules, and in California any part that modifies an emissions-controlled vehicle needs a CARB Executive Order to be street legal (see the California Air Resources Board aftermarket parts page). Cat-back and axle-back systems usually leave the catalysts alone, so they mainly face noise rules. Downpipes and test pipes sit at the other end. Read our guide on whether a high flow catalytic converter is legal before you order anything turbo-side, and check the rules where your car is registered.
Honest Fitment: What We Stock for the A4 2.0T
Straight talk: Vorsprung Autowerk builds parts for the 3.0T and 4.0T Audi engines. We do not make a house exhaust for the A4 2.0T, and we are not going to pretend a 3.0T part fits your car. If you are building a B8 or B8.5 A4 2.0T for off-road or track use, we do stock a 3 inch test pipe for the B8 A4 2.0T ($227.00), catless and sold for off-road use only. Expect a check engine light without a tune or O2 fix. Pair it with our Euro 6 O2 spacers, which fit downstream sensor bungs on EA888 builds. For the bigger picture on turbo-side parts, see our Audi A4 downpipe guide.
Driving an S4 or S5 3.0T? Here Is Your Exhaust Path
If your B8 or B8.5 has the supercharged 3.0T, you are in our wheelhouse. Many 3.0T owners hit the same wall: factory cats and cast manifolds are fine for stock power, then heat and restriction catch up as soon as you add a pulley, a ported supercharger or a tune. Dealer answer? Replace the same parts with the same parts and pay the Audi Tax twice.
Our High Flow Cats for the 3.0T ($1,049.99-$1,299.99) keep catalysts in the car and replace the restrictive factory converters with 200-cell metallic cores rated to 950°C:
- ✅ Full 2.5 inch flow path with no taper back down to OEM size
- ✅ 304L stainless at 2.0mm wall, TIG welded and back purged
- ✅ Extra-thick 10mm reinforced flanges and heat shielding included
- ✅ Fits B8/B8.5 S4 and S5, Q5 3.0T and SQ5, C7/C7.5 A6 and A7, and D4 A8 3.0T (not C6 A6, 4L Q7 or 4M Q7)
- ✅ Made to order, 14-21 days processing
Stacking more flow? Add HEH Headers V2 ($1,599.99-$1,999.99) for off-road builds, or the Shorty Headers ($999.99, pre-order). For dedicated track cars, the 3.0T Test Pipes V2 ($474.99) are the catless option, off-road use only.
✅ Thick-wall stainless, TIG welded and back purged ✅ Fitment help from real 3.0T owners ✅ Fast US shipping

Installation Notes
- ✅ Cat-back: a driveway job for most owners with jack stands, penetrating oil and a helper to align the rear section.
- ✅ Downpipe or cats: heat, seized hardware and tight sensor wiring make this a lift job. On the 3.0T, plan on significant disassembly under the car.
- ✅ Always use new gaskets and hang the system loosely, align the tips, then tighten front to rear.
- ✅ Recheck clamps and flanges after the first few heat cycles.

Audi A4 Exhaust System FAQ
What is the best Audi A4 exhaust system for a daily driver?
For most daily-driven 2.0T A4s, a resonated cat-back is the best balance. It keeps the factory catalysts, needs no tune, and controls highway drone while adding sound.
Does the Audi A4 have a 3.0T engine?
Not in North America. US and Canadian B8.5 and B9 A4s use the 2.0T four-cylinder. The supercharged 3.0T V6 went into the S4, S5, Q5 3.0T, SQ5, A6, A7 and A8, and those cars need 3.0T-specific exhaust parts.
Will an exhaust upgrade void my Audi A4 warranty?
A cat-back alone does not automatically void your warranty, but a dealer can deny a claim if the modification caused the failure. Downpipes and tunes create far more exposure than a cat-back.
Do I need a tune for an Audi A4 downpipe?
To get the full benefit, usually yes. A catless test pipe will almost always trigger a check engine light without a tune or O2 fix.
How do I stop exhaust drone in my A4?
Choose a resonated system, avoid removing catalysts, and listen to the exact system at highway speed before you buy. Drone is mostly a design choice, not something you can fully fix afterward.
Is a high flow cat street legal on an Audi?
Only if it carries the approval your state requires, such as a CARB Executive Order in California. Catless test pipes are for off-road use only.
Can B8 and B9 A4 exhaust parts be swapped?
No. The B8/B8.5 and B9 use different chassis and engine generations, so downpipes, mid-pipes and rear sections are generation specific.
Bottom Line on the Audi A4 Exhaust System
The right Audi A4 exhaust system starts with knowing exactly which A4 you have. For a 2.0T daily driver, a resonated cat-back is the sane choice, and turbo-side parts belong on tuned or track cars with a plan for emissions. If your Audi is really a supercharged 3.0T, skip the guesswork and start with our 3.0T High Flow Cats, then build from there.
