If you're planning your first real exhaust modification on an Audi 3.0T or 4.0T, the downpipe is usually where people start, and for good reason. It sits right off the turbo or supercharger outlet, so it has an outsized effect on exhaust flow, turbo spool, and sound compared to parts further back in the system. It's also one of the more confusing parts to shop for, mostly because of the catted-versus-catless question. Here's how to think through it.
What a downpipe actually does
The downpipe is the section of piping that connects the turbo (or, on supercharged 3.0T cars, the section just downstream of the manifold) to the rest of the exhaust. The factory downpipe on most of these platforms is narrow and houses a catalytic converter that's restrictive by aftermarket standards. Replacing it with a larger-diameter, mandrel-bent aftermarket downpipe reduces backpressure, which can improve turbo spool and throttle response and is usually the loudest, most noticeable change in an exhaust upgrade path.
Catted vs. catless: the real tradeoffs
A catted downpipe keeps a catalytic converter in place, usually a high-flow, high-cell-count unit rather than the restrictive factory piece. A catless downpipe removes the catalytic converter entirely and replaces it with open pipe. Catless will flow the most and is the loudest option, but it also means your car is running without emissions after-treatment in that section, which has real consequences: a much higher chance of a check engine light or emissions-related fault code (commonly related to catalyst efficiency monitoring), and in many places it is not legal for street use on a vehicle originally equipped with a catalytic converter. Emissions rules vary significantly by state and country, so if you're catless-curious, check your local regulations before you buy rather than after.
A high-flow catted downpipe is the middle ground most street-driven cars land on: most of the flow benefit of going catless, without the fault codes or the legal gray area. If your car is track-only or off-road only, that calculation changes.
Material and construction
Most downpipes in this space are mandrel-bent stainless steel, which is durable and reasonably priced. A handful of higher-end options use titanium for the weight savings, though that's more common in header and full exhaust builds than in a standalone downpipe. Whichever material you choose, mandrel bending (as opposed to crush bending) matters because it keeps the pipe's cross-section consistent through every bend instead of pinching it down, which is where a lot of the flow improvement actually comes from.
Resonated vs. non-resonated
Some downpipes include a resonator, a small chamber that tames drone and raspiness, especially on S-tronic and DSG cars where it's more noticeable. A resonated downpipe is usually the better daily-driver choice; a non-resonated downpipe is louder and rawer, and is more common as an add-on to an already aggressive cat-back setup rather than a first exhaust mod.
Getting fitment right
Downpipes are not interchangeable across generations even within the same engine family. A B8 3.0T downpipe will not fit a B8.5 or B9 car, and 2.0T (EA888), 3.0T (EA837/EA839), and 4.0T (EA825) downpipes are all different parts. Always confirm your exact chassis code and engine code, not just the model name and year, before ordering. If you're not sure which generation you have, your VIN or engine code will confirm it.
